In Reply To OEM driveshaft - repair or replace with 1-piece? posted by EUGENE on April 07, 2011 at 11:46 PM

Message driveshaft be sure to index mark all the flanges and other parts removed so that they go back in the same position. This will go a long way to a vibration free fix. Also note the position of the shims at the center support bearing bracket they are not washers but are there for driveshaft height adjust at the bearing. Also note that there is sise to side adjustment at the center support bracket. Index this position before you remove the driveshaft so the same left right alignment can be maintained.

You will probably have flat spots at all 4 of the universal joints. They can be detected when the driveshaft is out. If minor flat spot with no bearing slack just leave alone. If really bad these joints are not replaceable. Then the OEM driveshaft gets expensive to replace. A typical driveshaft would charge about 450 to rebuild the driveshaft with balance, The replacement cost at Couirtesy Nissan is about 700 but need to check this.

Regardless of the way you go replace the tranny rear support, they may look good but they sag with age.

I tried a 1 piece and never could get rid of the vibs so I went back to the OEM 2 piece with a replaced center bearing.

The factory went to the 2 piece because they couldn't get the 1 piece to be free of torsional vibration in certain rpm ranges. They would have preferred a 1 piece because it is cheaper to manufacture but a smooth ride controlled there discision.
